I miss Happy Bats! I loved going to a real video store and browsing their fine collection…organized by director or genre or country, not on how many days you can rent it for. Their horror section was screamingly awesome! Happy Bats was a community shrine that was unfairly removed and I will forever mourn that empty space when I walk by…
2828 Main Street, Unit 2–. That’s what T and I wrote in the ‘destination’ field on the moving company’s form. That was one year and 24 days ago (to be exact).
Four months prior was my first time on Main Street. It was to look at a promising one bedroom condo for rent – 1 br + den, 1 bath, in suite storage, cork floors, west-facing. 2828 Main Street. Google Street View, showed a promising corner of nearby provisions in case I needed to make a getaway in Lorraine (my car) – a Chevron, MoneyMart, Subway and Starbucks. Gas, money, food and coffee. You never know, maybe this Ontario girl would miss her warm lakes, hot summers and snowy nights.
This was the only apartment that we would look at in Vancouver. This one was a “gooder” as T would say. The Happy Bats video store clinched it for me (for those who know me, know that I spent a lot of time in video stores in my youth – 99 to be exact). That morning, I also had my first egg sandwich at Lucy’s Diner (for those who know me, know how much I like an egg sandwich – at any hour of the day).
Sadly, when I arrived, one year and 24 days ago (to be exact), Happy Bats was gone and there was nothing written in the ‘destination’ field.
Hmm. Was this a sign? Maybe this whole Vancouver thing wasn’t meant to be. Nope. It was pretty bang on. I came to a changing (disappearing) Main Street.
Moving to Vancouver was a moment of needed change for me. I always liked change. Change is good. I had to say goodbye to some really great people and places in my life to be where I am today, but it was the right move for me. I remain the same Ontario girl who always drew apples in her trees. I will never disappear. Hopefully Main Street will be able to say the same. If not, then at least we have these pictures to help us to remember. Thank you for creating this.
